Walter Berndt (1899-1979) was a comic strip artist born in Brooklyn, New York. He worked as an office boy at the New York Journal, before starting his own career in comics. In 1924 he created the comic strip Smitty, which he continued on through 1973. He won the Reuben Award for 1969 for this strip. He also produced the comic strip Herby from 1938 through 1960. full article at wikipedia
