We have discussed the notion of adding an “official name” or ”legal name” property to some topics, but for now, the display name of a topic should be its most commonly-used name. In particular, cities show up in address information frequently; no one addresses mail to The City of New York, NY 10021. I am changing it back and adding T.C.O.N.Y. as an alias.
Your point about verification is a good one. However, this open model seems to work acceptably for Wikipedia, and with our finer granularity of assertions and login requirement, we have better means for detecting and undoing abusive usage patterns. As with Wikipedia, I would encourage you to watch (subscribe to the RSS feed of) topics that particularly interest you.
Another approach used by some of our users is to perform QA on the topics of interest and note the last-known-good timestamp. Queries via the API can then be scoped to only return information older than the last QA check.

The City Of New York not "New York." New York is an "aka." But I'm not going to change it back and forth every other day. This is the only thing I don't like about Freebase. Anyone can just come in here and change the information abd screw up the API.

I really think Freebase should look at verifying information or utilize editors to approve changes before they go live. I'd hate to see all my hard work replaced with bogus information.

I don't think this should be the fictional universe topic, really -- the Wizarding world is one aspect of the Potterverse; the other is the Muggle world. It would be accurate to say that Hogwarts, Dumbledore, etc. are part of the Wizarding World, but inaccurate to say that the Dursley's are part of it.

This is a good point; "fictional setting" should include those fictional locations that aren't actually used as a setting, assuming that they are of sufficient interest for someone to enter, despite the fact that the name is "setting" rather than "location".

This was a deliberate choice on our part. We chose the name "fictional setting" because it's accurate for all places that appear in works of fiction -- San Francisco is the setting of many works of fiction, but it is not itself a fictional place. "Fictional location" would only be accurate for wholly imaginary places like Middle Earth or the planet Vulcan.

I'd like to suggest that either you rename this type "fictional location" or at least set up an alias of that name.

The rationale for this is, all of the other "setting" types are called "location". This would keep the names consistent.

Fictional Setting: Of what fictional universe?

This is a bit of a problem right now -- since the "fictional setting" type can be applied to real locations as well as wholly fictional ones, we'd end up with the property "Appears in these fictional universes" (or words to that effect) on hundreds of real-world locations, which seems pretty weird. I'd love to figure out a way to handle this better, though, if you have any thoughts on it.

We had originally modeled fictional setting similar to the way we modeled fictional character, where the fictional setting and real-world setting were considered two separate entities (thus there would be a "real" London and a fictional London based on the real one), but nobody understood this or used it, so we killed it.
